❝I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders, or espers here, come join me. That is all.❞
— Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

If you ask a person who’s either been to Haruhi’s old middle school, East Middle, or know her at North High, the first word that comes to mind when describing Haruhi Suzumiya is definitely eccentric, or any synonym to that word. Of course, Haruhi is described by others as, well, both beautiful, hot when she doesn’t say anything, and is even considered as an A-class girl by Taniguchi, one of Haruhi’s classmates both at her middle school and currently in North High.

However, there is more to Haruhi that meets the eye. Of course, Haruhi isn’t exactly ‘weird’ for no reason; she actually has reasoning behind her main actions, and that reason is because she wants to be different, unique. She doesn’t want a typical, ordinary life that most high schoolers lead: go to school, join a club, study, get a boyfriend or girlfriend, and repeat. That would make her the same as all the others, and that’s something that Haruhi despises the most.

But why exactly does Haruhi not want to be typical?

❝Have you ever realized how insignificant your existence is on this planet? I have.❞
— Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

It’s because of what she realized in elementary school, when she went to a baseball game with her dad, she noticed that she was just a small percentage out of the many people who attended the game -- and even that percentage was just a small drop, just 1/2000th of the population in the ocean called Japan. That epiphany left her not only brokenhearted, but surprised. She was only one person in that group of people and that whole group was just 1/2000th of the population?

For a long time before this sudden epiphany, Haruhi had thought that her life was interesting; she had the most amazing friends, family, and life. But then she suddenly believed that she was wrong -- if she was just a small person within a whole country, then it was obvious: her life was no different than any other kid’s life. The things that she had believed to be considered the most interesting thing in the world: her school, the classes, her life at home - well, that too would be happening at all the other schools in Japan.

That’s why she wanted to mix things up, to live a life that wasn’t normal, but extraordinary. And that’s why she did those weird things to find and call aliens, time travelers, espers, and sliders. She wanted her life to be different.

On many different occasions, Haruhi Suzumiya does indeed have mood swings. She goes from melancholy to excitement to boredom. And on that note, you do not want to bore Haruhi. Haruhi’s boredom is like her rage - you will never know when some idea will just pop up in her mind. And when that does happen, well, trouble happens. And if you, as a person, is the result of making Haruhi bored, you are most likely to be dragged into ridiculous shenanigans. Or penalties.

Speaking of penalties, Haruhi doesn’t necessarily like giving them - the only reason she does is to encourage other people to do what she says (especially brigade members or people she challenges), and to make sure that there are no traitors in her brigade. It’s also the same reason why she gets upset at Kyon: he doesn’t always agree with her like the others do (well, Mikuru doesn’t always agree, but it’s easy to make her do what Haruhi wants).

Haruhi doesn’t like it when people don’t agree with her -- it’s one of her biggest faults. In the “Sigh”, when she hits Mikuru repeatedly because the mascot’s acting wasn’t what she wanted, Kyon got mad at her and Haruhi yelled back, asking, “Why don’t you do what I say?!” Basically, Haruhi is slightly greedy when it comes to her brigade members and believes that the world should revolve around her - so why is Kyon the only person who is immune to any of her demands.

Speaking of her brigade, Haruhi is very close to each and all of her brigade members. In fact, she would never replace them -- or even add to the brigade. It’s because she believes all of them to be really important to her, and she chose them, and nobody else. During “Disappearance”, “Rampage” and “Surprise”, Haruhi proves herself to be very motherly towards her brigade members in times of trouble. In “Disappearance”, for the three days when Kyon was in the hospital, Haruhi stayed with him in a sleeping bag the whole time. And in “Rampage” and “Surprise”, Haruhi took care of Nagato when she was sick, even to the point where she worries about them.

In general, Haruhi doesn’t want people to toy with her brigade -- unless it’s her, of course -- they are hers and if you mess with them, you pretty much mess with her and you do not want to mess with someone who has the power to destroy and recreate the universe at will.

Even though her brigade is, yes, important to her - the brigade acts like a wall, at least, a wall that divides herself (as the weird girl at school) from the rest. It also pretty much protects her from having a boyfriend. After all, she believes that, well, “Love is a mental illness”. She knows that she has hormones - she knows that, yes, she is a normal girl. But she doesn’t want to get involved in a relationship because it will stop her from having the supernatural fun that she honestly wants to have.

Abilities: Haruhi has several abilities, but her main ability is her power to alter reality with her subconscious. She is unaware of this ability due to certain circumstances, but basically this power allows her to warp reality if she wills it. Examples of this are: talking animals, spring time weather during the fall, creating and uncreating the world, etc.

She is also able to create 'closed spaces' and 'Celestials', which exist in a enclosed space that only espers can enter. This will probably never happen in-game, though.
